Balsamroot

Arrowleaf Balsamroot (Balsamorhiza sagittata) is a native American plant that blooms in the early spring. The flower is a member of the Asteraceae (Sunflower). The herb has notably large arrow leafs and big yellow flowers. The plant is not to be confused with Mules Ears whose leaves are dark green.

The stems and flowers are often covered in a grey silky substances.

The seeds are glabrous achene. USU reports that Arrowleaf Balsamroot is a preferred plant in rangelands. Horses like eating the flowers. Native Americans ate the roots and ground the seeds for flour.

This would be a great addition to any Native Plant garden.
