The route breaks from I15 in Farmington and travels South along the West Side of the Salt Lake Valley through the towns of West Valley City, Taylorsville and Draper.
The route turns East at about 6400 South providing access to Murray, Sandy and the Fort Union Areas. It then turns North near the mount of Big Cottonwood Canyon and then connects to I80 at the Mouth of Big Cottonwood Canyon.
The Salt Lake Belt Route does not take a full loop around the city. The route flows on Foothills Boulevard on the East Benches. The bulk of the traffic, of course, merges into I80.
