Hyacinthaceae Family The hyacinth used to be included in the Lily family. It was recently reclassified as a separate family. The family is considered to have about 1000 species in 70 genera.
The flower was named from the Greek divine hero (Ὑάκινθος — Hyakinthos) who was the son of Clio and Pierus. The myth is that Hyacinth died when playing discus with Apollo.
