The Gap

Gap [NYSE GPS] is multinational company that includes The Gap, Banana Republic and Old Navy chain of stores.

Donald and Doris Fisher opened the first Gap in San Francisco selling Levi's and LPs.

Millard Drexler pushed the company through a spree of rapid development in the 1990s. Mr. Drexler established Old Navy originally as a warehouse store for Gap and later as a chain of clearance priced casual clothing.

Suffering from over expansion, Gap and Millard Drexler parted ways. Drexler went on to found J. Crew.

Banana Republic

Banana Republic was founded in 1978 by Mel and Patricia Ziegler. The stores had a safari theme. Gap purchased the chain in 1983.
